DESIGNING A GROWING COMMUNITY SPACE – a thesis by Yaro Berendsen
DESIGNING A GROWING COMMUNITY SPACE
a thesis by Yaro Berendsen
A recent thesis by Yaro Berendsen has examined the hypothetical challenges of how urban agriculture can transform vacant land into vibrant community spaces in Milton, Glasgow. The study has proposed a unique urban agriculture park design, identifying 14 key guidelines and 11 principles to enhance social cohesion and foster community building within deprived neighbourhoods. This research highlights the potential of urban agriculture in spatial design to create more inclusive urban communities.
Milton is a deprived Glasgow neighbourhood facing social and health challenges exacerbated by limited access to quality open spaces. Urban agriculture is proposed as a tool to repurpose vacant land, enhance social interactions, and foster community building.
The research identifies key design features and spatial opportunities that promote community cohesion, resulting in 14 design guidelines and an additional 11 principles, all integrated into a tailored park design for Milton. The study concludes that urban agriculture, when incorporated into park designs, can serve as a catalyst for social cohesion and more inclusive urban communities.
